Unemployed jailed for stealing a taxi

Sampson Ayena, 25, unemployed, has been sentenced to six months imprisonment for stealing a taxi by a Tarkwa District court.

The accused pleaded guilty.

Prosecuting Police Inspector Faustina Celestina Anaman, told the court, presided over by Mr Jonathan Nunoo, that the complainant, Stephen Korang, is a taxi driver who resides at Esuoso, a suburb of Tarkwa.

He said the accused is a resident of Bonsawire.

Inspector Anaman said last year, the convict, a friend to the complainant persuaded him (Korang) to buy him a taxi to enable them to earn some income.

She said the complainant agreed and bought the taxi for Agyena at a cost of GH¢5,300.00.

Inspector Anaman said the owner of the vehicle asked Korang to come for the car documents the next day, however, because he was travelling the next day, he asked Agyena to collect the documents on his behalf.

She said when the complainant returned from his trip, Agyena had collected the car documents and fled from the town with the taxi and all efforts to locate him proved unsuccessful.

Inspector Anaman said December 28, the complainant had information that the convict was hiding at Kumfueku in the Shama District and reported the case at the Inchaban police station, and Agyena was subsequently arrested and handed over to the Tarkwa police for interrogation.

According to the prosecutor, Agyena admitted the offence in his caution statement but said he had sold the vehicle to someone else and spent the money.
