Taxi drivers in the Northern regional capital of Tamale have abandoned post over the recent increment in petroleum prices.
Petroleum products have been increased by 27 percent. The latest increment is occasioned by the passage of the Energy Sector Levy by Parliament last month. The increase margin is one of the biggest in recent times.
A gallon of petrol at some fuel stations now sells at about Ghc15.40 and 15. 80 pesewas with diesel going for Ghc14.50 and 14. 60 pesewas.
According to Starr News’ Northern regional correspondent Eliasu Tanko, commuters were stranded on Wednesday morning as the drivers parked their vehicles without prior notification.
Tanko said the drivers are complaining of high operational cost and until there is an increment in fares it will be difficult for them to survive.
Several taxis were seen parked at various Taxi Ranks, parking junctions and at homes which left passengers with no choice, but to resort to tricycles and motorbikes as means of transportation.
Starr News also found out that the motorbike business otherwise called ‘Okada business’ is springing up due to the decision of commercial drivers to park their vehicles.
