Police say they are ready for NPP emergency congress

The police say they are ready for the emergency national congress of the largest opposition party, the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the Brong-Ahafo Regional capital, Sunyani.

Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Christopher Tawiah, Public Relations Officer, the Regional Police Command, told the Ghana News Agency (GNA) that adequate measures had been put in place to assure the delegates of security protection.

The congress would be held at the Coronation Park on this coming Saturday and is expected to attract about 6,500 delegates.

The party’s Presidential Candidate, Nana Addo Dankwah Akufo-Addo and his running mate Alhaji Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia would be attending alongside other leading members.

The GNA gathered that over 400 police officers would be on hand to see to it that nothing goes wrong.

Meanwhile, feverish preparations had been going on to keep the congress venue in shape.

Large posters and big banners embossed with portraits of Nana Akufo-Addo are visible all over the place.

The main entrance and corners of the park are also awash with posters of parliamentary candidates of the party.

Mr. Alfred Ofori Annye, the Regional Secretary, confirmed that “all is set for a successful congress”.

He said security and accommodation arrangements had already been finalized.

He called on all party members, supporters and sypathizers in the region to comport themselves.

Separately, some polling station officers of the NPP in the Sunyani East Constituency, have been suspended for breaching the party’s constitution, by declaring support for Ghana’s former Ambassador to Libya, Mr. George Kumi, who has decided to contest the 2016 parliamentary poll as an Independent candidate.
