Conference On 1996 Elections

The government committed a total of ?25 billion on the 1996 Presidential and Parliamentary elections. And for the impending re-opening and exhibition of the 1995 voters register, as well as the Unit Committee elections, it hopes to spend a total of ?10 billion. 45% of this amount is to be provided by the donor Community. Since the Electoral commission cannot expect to continue to receive foreign assistance indefinitely it has to fall on national revenue. This makes it imperative for government to make available funds at all times if the new democratic dispensation is to be consolidated. A member of the Electoral Commission, Professor Ernest Dumor made the submission when he opened a two-day conference at Legon near Accra on the 1996 elections and democratic consolidation in Ghana.
