Out of 84 babies tested for the Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome (AIDS) and Human Immune Virus (HIV) at the Effia Nkwanta Hospital, only three positive cases occured.
Dr Roland Sowah, Western Regional Coordinator of the National AIDS control, told the Ghana News Agency that the hospital had acquired a new machine for examining new born babies in the facility.
He said the babies are tested between age six weeks and 18 months.
He said the three children who tested positive were children whose mothers did not attend clinic or take up the Mother to Child Transmission programme (PMCT) seriously.
Dr Sowah said the regional prevalence rate among pregnant women according to the Sentinel Surveillance Report of 2014 was 2.4 and this placed the region at fifth position.
He said the disease is mainly transmitted through unprotected sex saying despite the dwindling health education and advertisements, people must be wary of the mode of transmission and stay away from casual and unprotected sexual activities.
