Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology, KNUST is to expand its student population to 50 thousand in the near future. This is aimed at providing training for a larger number of Ghanaians in science and technology.
The Vice-Chancellor of the university Professor Kwesi Andam disclosed this at a special congregation at which honorary degrees were conferred on five personalities who have distinguished themselves in various fields of endeavour, and contributed immensely to the development of the University.
Prof Andam said though there are inadequate faculty and residential facilities, the University Authorities are determined to achieve the vision, and have, therefore, started various initiatives to expand and even create additional faculties.
He said this initiative of the KNUST notwithstanding, it is still important for government to intervene and adequately resource the University to enable it to meet its target of 50,000-student population.
Such interventions he noted should go beyond infrastructure, to addressing the poor remuneration of lecturers.
The five who were conferred with the degrees include Nana Otuo Siriboe, Omanhene of the Juaben Traditional Area and a member of the Council of State, Matilda Esi Fiadgigbey, First Woman President of the Ghana Institute of Surveyors (GIS).
The rest are Louis Casely-Hayford, former Chief Executive of the Volta River Authority (VRA)l, Professor J.W. Powell, Founder of the Technology Consultancy Centre (TCC), KNUST, and Dr Emmanuel Kwame Obeng.
