Mahama: Splashing gruesome images in media bad

President John Mahama has bemoaned the splashing of gory images, especially of accidents, across newspapers and on television screens.

He said there are children, who read these newspapers and watch these news stories on TV and to get them used to seeing human beings in that state makes them accept it as normal and “I don’t think that is a good thing.”

“That must be an area that we should look at to see how we can curb the over-zealousness of some of the media in this particular way,” he added.

President Mahama made these observations when the outgoing members of the National Media Commission (NMC) called on him Wednesday, November 26, 2015.

Led by the chairman of the outgoing members of the commission, Ambassador Kabral Blay Amihere, the NMC members, among others, commended President Mahama for his support and positive collaboration with the commission.

He referred to the process of appointing CEOs and board members for state-owned media organisations, noting that “in the past, there was a lot of tension, mistrust around the process, but with you in charge, we have created a better atmosphere for the constitutional process to take place.”

The Commission also thanked the President for his personal assistance with a permanent office building.

President Mahama congratulated the commissioners for a successful tenure, which ends November 30.

In addition to the new office location, President Mahama also informed the outgoing commissioners that a Toyota minibus and pickup truck will be made available to the commission for its work.
