Teachers in some communities of the Keta District may soon be withdrawn en bloc. The reason? Constant harassment and threats of juju and other occult attacks on them by some unknown persons in the areas.
Mr S.K. Dewotor, the Keta District Director of Education who sounded the warning, was silent about the perpetrators but noted the serious implications in the near future.
Mr Dewotor explained that there have been frequent reports of such juju and occultist attacks on some teachers in some of the communities of the district recently.
However, things got to a head when in the early hours of Tuesday the doorstep of a female teacher and headteacher of one of the schools (names withheld) were smeared with blood and other occult materials.
He said the situation is frightening as all the teachers seem to be in panic. “This is unfortunate and detrimental to the development of education in the area”, he observed.
He gave the warning when he addressed the Open Day celebration of the Anloga-Avete basic schools at Anloga in the Volta Region on Tuesday.
Mr Dewotor said the situation is creating serious problems for the district directorate as this is at a time that most teachers are unwilling to go on postings to the rural areas.
He said children will always be at the receiving end in such a situation and called for a proactive relations between parents and teachers to enable the children to develop their academic talents.
Mr Dewotor therefore called on the community to create an enabling environment so that the teachers can fully promote quality education among the children.
He also appealed to the Parent-Teacher Association (PTA) and the School Management Committee (SMC) to meet regularly to discuss issues of common interest. The MP for Anlo, Mr James Victor Gbeho, pledged to support the school in its infrastructure development.
Mr J.K. Togobo, Headmaster of the school, appealed to the district assembly to help construct a kindergarten block as well as lower primary classrooms to enhance teaching and learning by the pupils.
The Rotary Club of Tema used the occasion to donate assorted books worth ?50 million to the school.
