All set for NDC primaries

All is set for the historic Presidential and Parliamentary Elections of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) slated for Saturday, November 21, across the country.

The delegates are expected to endorse the candidature of President John Dramani Mahama for a second term in office as he is the sole contender for the party’s Election 2016 Presidential candidate slot.

The party has designated 8,224 voting centres across the country for the polls which is expected to open at 0700 hours to 1700 hours to be supervised by the Electoral Commission.

According to NDC electoral statistics made available to the Ghana News Agency in Accra, a total of 728 Candidates are contesting for parliamentary seats across the country, which comprise 74 female contestants; 127 sitting MPs; 76 metropolitan, municipal and district chief executives (MMDCEs); three physically challenged persons; and 62 going unopposed.

The Regional statistics indicate that Western Region has 960 voting centres; 70 aspirants; only three female contestants; 15 sitting MPs seeking for re-elections; three MMDCES; and seven going unopposed while the Central Region has 560 contestants; 57 aspirants; nine female aspirants; 13 sitting MPs seeking for re-election; 13 MMDCEs; and two sitting MPs going unopposed.

The Volta Region has 1,288 voting centres; 89 aspirants; with 14 female candidates; 23 sitting MPs seeking for re-election; one MMDCE contesting; and three sitting MPs going unopposed while the Ashanti region has 1,741 voting centres; 93 aspirants; 13 female contestants; four sitting MPs seeking re-election; 13 MMDCEs contestants; 16 unopposed contestants; and one physically challenged candidate.

The Greater Accra Region has 522 voting centres; 100 aspirants; 13 female aspirants; 16 sitting MPs seeking for re-election; one MMDCE contesting; and five sitting MPs going unopposed; whilst Eastern region has 776 voting centres; 77 aspirants; nine female aspirants; seven sitting MPs seeking re-election; 11 MMDCEs contesting; and eight sitting MPs going unopposed.

The Brong- Ahafo Region has 833 voting centres; 58 aspirants; four female contestants; 14 sitting MPs seeking for re-election; ten MMDCEs contestants; 13 sitting MPs going unopposed; and one physically challenged contestant; and the Northern Region has 711 voting centres; 106 aspirants; three female contestants; 15 sitting MPs seeking for re-election; four MMDCEs contestants; and six sitting MPs going unopposed.

The Upper East Region has 438 voting centres; 45 aspirants; three female candidates; 12 sitting MPs seeking for re-elections; 12 MMDCEs contesting; and two sitting MPs going unopposed; and Upper West has 395 voting centres; 33 aspirants; three female aspirants; eight sitting MPs seeking for re-elections; eight MMDCEs who are contesting as candidates; and one physically challenged contestant.
