Ghana needs experienced-based extension delivery- Agric Expert

Okumaning (E/R), Aug 1, GNA- Prof. Kwame Afreh-Nuamah, an agricultural expert has stressed the need for a more participatory and experienced-based extension delivery system to boost sustainable agricultural and rural development.

This, he said, calls for structural transformation in Ghana’s agricultural policy to enhance effective way of producing food and its security and help in reducing poverty.

Prof. Afreh-Nuamah, a Research Scientist at the University of Ghana Agricultural Research Station at Okumaning-Kade, in the Eastern Region told the Ghana News Agency (GNA) that there was the need for new agricultural information to get to farmers on time.

He said this would help them become aware of available technologies and interventions, which could be adopted to improve their level of knowledge for better agricultural practices.

Prof. Afreh-Nuamah said this requires the needed focus to making agricultural extension services more participatory.

For a truly participatory approach to be achieved, several key elements needed to be re-examined and transformed. This include the role of extension agency from one that could persuade and deliver to one of much general and open-ended support of local people’s development initiatives.

He said extension is not just a means of delivering technical messages and advice, but a learning process where the aim is to develop people’s skills and abilities.

Prof Afreh-Numah said extension services should relate to people as members of groups, emphasising that the development of group structure and empowerment of members to take to extension activities.
