Members and sympathizers of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), together with residents in the Ketu South constituency of the Volta Region have taken to the streets to protest against Fifi Fiave Kwetey, the Member of Parliament (MP) for the area.
The protesters, who marched through the streets of Klikor and Agbozume, expressed dissatisfaction with the stewardship of Mr. Kwetey and described him as an incompetent representative of theirs in parliament.
They have therefore served notice to the hierarchy of the NDC to ensure that the MP gets a better replacement in the upcoming primaries else, they would vote for the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the 2016 parliamentary election.
A spokesperson, David Bani, stressed, “For arrogant Fifi Kwetey to win, we will rather vote for the NDC. We will vote ‘skirt and blouse.’”
He noted that since Fifi Kwetey became the MP, he had never engaged his constituents to periodically update them on the policies of government. More so, none of the promises made by him, such as provision of public place of convenience, water, sanitation facilities and rehabilitation of roads had been fulfilled.
Prior to Fifi Kwetey’s election in 2012, similar agitations and protests went against his predecessor, Albert Zigah.
The NDC is preparing for its November 7 primaries. So far a total of 86 aspirants in the Volta Region have been cleared for the polls.
A joint vetting committee made up of selected party executives from the constituency, regional and national levels and chaired by the NDC’s National Vice Chairman, Samuel Ofosu Ampofo, gave the aspirants the green light to run in the parliamentary primaries after a two-day vetting exercise.
However, the exercise has not taken place in Ketu South and a few other constituencies. One of the five aspirants from Ketu South – Albert Zigah – was disqualified after the case had been referred to the national executives.
The other aspirants are Famous Kuadugah, Sylvanus Yao Amedorme and Jim Yao Morti.
There have been conflicting reports on the fate of Jim Yao Morti. Although there is no known official position of the National Executives of the NDC, there are rumours that he has been disqualified – speculations that are creating tension in the Ketu South constituency, especially among people who believe he will give the incumbent MP, Fifi Kwetey, a good run for his money.
John Sallah, the Unit Committee Chairman of Klikor, pointed out that if the leadership of the NDC wants to know what the will of the people really is, then they should allow all the aspirants to contest.
“If that happens, they cannot impose the incompetent Fifi Kwetey on us. With what is happening it is clear that they are trying to impose Fifi on us,” he observed.
