Kufuor, Akufo-Addo could have saved Afoko – Political Scientist

A Political Science Lecturer at the Methodist University College, Dr. Bonsu Osei Wusu believes the suspension of the National Chairman of the New Patriotic (NPP), Paul Afoko, could have been prevented if some stalwarts it the party had been proactive in resolving the disputes in the elephant family.

For instance, he said, if former President John Agyekum Kufuor and the 2016 Presidential Candidate of the party, Nana Addo-Dankwa Akufo-Addo, had stepped up their game in uniting the Danquah-Busia-Dombo Tradition, they wouldn’t have been confronted with chaos in the party.

“I believe that some elders in the party, especially, former President Kufuor, Akufo-Addo and others should have been proactive in resolving the impasse in the party amicably. There can be unity in diversity,” he said in an interview with Kwaku Owusu Adjei on Si Me So on Kasapa 102.3 FM Friday.

The National Executive Committee (NEC) of the NPP late Friday morning unanimously voted to suspend Mr. Afoko indefinitely as National Chairman of the party.

The NEC, Kasapafmonline.com understands, upheld the overwhelming decision by the Disciplinary Committee of the party which decided that Mr. Afoko be suspended.

But the controversial decision, according to Dr. Osei Wusu, could have been prevented if the party leaders had found a common ground to the issues of mistrust and suspicion among their rank and file.

He blamed the Council of Elders as well as the current crop of the national executives for the sorry state of the NPP.

“I have always said from the beginning that the NPP’s biggest problem is their Council of Elders the very moment they took a decision for Afoko to be suspended.”

“I think that the issue should have rather started from the grassroots to the top but here is a case that it started from the top where they took sides. So, even if Afoko has a problem, where should he have gone to?”

“The Chairman and the other executives of the party are also partly to be blamed in this regard.”
