School Feeding Programme to run smoothly – Minister

The School Feeding Programme is being re-organised to run smoothly than currently, Mrs Della Sowah, Deputy Minister of Gender, Children and Social Protection has stated.

She said the reorganisation would facilitate prompt payments to caterers and link local farmers to the supply chain more sustainable.

Mrs Sowah, who is also the Member of Parliament for Kpando made the remarks when she led a team to pay stipends to beneficiaries of the Ghanaian Livelihood Empowerment Against Poverty (LEAP) Programme at the Schoonhven Village, a community of mainly cured lepers, near Ho.

She said six more districts have been roped into LEAP in the Volta Region.

They are Adaklu, Biakoye, Akatsi-South, Akatsi-North, Ketu-North and South Dayi making the total number of districts 20.

Under the programme, started in 2008, as one of the country’s social protection strategies, stipends are given to the very poor households to increase access to health, education and food.

Mrs Sowah said that progress of the LEAP reflected in the rising numbers of beneficiaries and the periodic raises in the stipends.

Sole person households now take GHC64.00 instead of GHC48.00, two people households GHC76.00 instead of GHC60.00, homes with three people, GHC88.00 instead of GHC72, and households with four or more, GHC106.00 instead of GHC96.00.
