Firm Health Ghana Foundation screens inmates

Firm Health Ghana Foundation, a Non-Governmental Organisation that seeks to promote the well-being of Ghanaians, has offered free treatment and medical screening for inmates of the Tarkwa Prison including officers and their families.

A medical team comprising doctors, nurses and pharmacists erected temporary consulting structures within the prison yard and screened 76 prison officers and their dependants for hypertension, diabetes, sugar level and other diseases.

Two hundred and eighty-one inmates were also treated for various skin diseases, diarrhoea, and bodily pains, while six of them were diagnosed with mild stroke, low blood pressure and hernia.

The inmates with special cases were referred to the Tarkwa Government Hospital for thorough check ups and those with hernia would undergo surgical operations.

Dr Joseph Darko, the Foundation Director in charge of medical services, who doubles as a medical officer at the Tarkwa Government Hospital, disclosed this in an interview with the Ghana News Agency after the exercise.

He said the annual health screening programme, which was sponsored by Robert Electronics and Health Spring Pharmacy, was held for selected security officers within the Tarkwa Nsueam Municipality.

He said last year the foundation organised a similar exercise for officers of the Ghana Police Service and decided to bring the hospital closer to the Tarkwa inmates because they could not access health care easily due to their present condition.

Mr Raymond Muzu, the General Manager of Health Spring Pharmacy, said the pharmacy donated GHc 5,000.00 worth of drugs to the beneficiaries.

The Deputy Superintendent of the Prison, DSP Emmanuel Azafokpe, expressed gratitude to the three organisations for the gesture.
