Archbishop of Canterbury arrives

Accra, July 24, GNA – The Most Reverend Right Reverend Dr. Rowan Douglas Williams, Arch Bishop of Canterbury and Primate of the Church of England, arrived in Accra on Wednesday for a three-day tour.

Nana Addo Dankwa Akuffo Addo, Minister of Foreign Affairs, Dr. Kwame Addo Kufuor, Minister of Defence, the Right Reverend Robert Okine, Anglican Archbishop of West Africa and Bishop Dr. Justice Akrofi, Bishop of Accra, met him on arrival. Also at the airport to welcome him were the hierarchy of the Anglican Diocese of Accra and the British High Commissioner, Dr. Rod Pollen.

Speaking to newsmen, Rt. Rev. Douglas Williams said there was the need for the church and state to collaborate for the development of the nation. He said the church had a role in preserving peace and caring for the new generation of Africa, adding that, protracted conflicts on the continent was the result of the break down of communities.

While in Accra, the Archbishop would call on President John Agyekum Kufour, the Acting President of the Ga Traditional Council and preach in a number of Anglican Churches. He would also meet the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II and the Heads of the Anglican Church in Kumasi and Cape Coast.
