Bolga fights cholera outbreak

The Bolgatanga municipality is unlikely to record high cases of cholera this year.

In some past years within the municipality, the rains came along with cholera, some of which resulted in deaths.

In its quest to prevent cholera this year, the Bolgatanga Municipal Assembly, in collaboration with the Ministry of Local Government, has contracted Upper East Environmental Service to spray some vantage places in the municipality.

Coordinator of the Upper East Environmental Service, Ernest Nutor, mentioned that the spraying is being carried out in all major drains, markets and bus stations. The team has also sprayed the various refuse dump sites and public toilets and urinals.

He said the spraying would continue till all public and open spaces, as well as major and minor drains are disinfected.

Bolgatanga Municipal Sanitation Officer, Leo Logochura, in an interview with the DAILY GUIDE, said the spraying exercise has come at the right time “and it’s very important in the assembly’s quest to prevent cholera this year.

“People have refused to keep their environments clean despite the series of cautions and public education on the need to keep and live in a clean environment.

Mr Logochura lamented that “they are ignoring the advice and education and if the assembly also decides to stay unconcerned, cholera will definitely set in and the burden will be on the assembly and government. They are always quick to ask for help from assembly, yet they ignore the education and advice.”

He was happy with the decision to spray all areas that are fertile grounds for the breeding of the organisms that spread cholera, saying, “If they are failing to do their part, the assembly will do its part to prevent cholera in the Bolgatanga municipality.”
