Group vows to picket at EC office despite Police warning

Pressure group “Let My Vote Count” has vowed to go ahead with its picketing on the need for a new voters’ register and present a petition to the Electoral Commission despite a Police warning to them to stop.

The group had written to the Police asking for permission to march on September 16 from the Obra Spot at the Kwame Nkrumah Circle, through some principal streets of Accra, and end up at the EC premises to present a petition on the need to have a new voters’ register for the 2016 general elections.

However, a statement signed by the Accra Regional Police commander, Deputy Commissioner of Police Christian T. Yohuno said “…unfortunately, your decision to picket at the Parliament House and the Electoral Commission could not be approved due to security reasons.”

The statement explained that “both locations [EC and Parliament] are security establishments and for that matter, picketing which is expected to attract 2,000 participants or more cannot be permitted within or around the domain.”

It consequently proposed a new route to the group, but that has been turned down by the group, as they argued the reasons given by the Police were not cogent enough.

Convener of the group, David Asante told Martin Asiedu-Dartey on TV3’s Midday Live Wednesday “we will insist on our rights… As it stands now, we are going to the premises of the Electoral Commission come 16th September”.
