Businessman remanded at Tarkwa

A 37 year-old businessman based at Abuakwa, near Kumasi in the Ashanti region, has been remanded into prison custody by the Tarkwa Circuit Court for issuing false cheque.

Bismark Amofa pleaded not guilty to the charge, and will re-appear before the court on September 7.

Police Detective Chief Inspector Oscar Amponsah told the Court, presided over by Mr. Justice Obeng Asante, that the complainant, Stephen Dankwa-Smith, is a businessman and lives at Tarkwa.

He said on July 7, Amofo and his brother-in-law, Dennis Adjei contacted the complainant to assist them with a loan of GH¢15,000.00.

The accused person then issued his Stanbic bank cheque number 000030 with a face value of GH¢18,000.00 dated on August 8, 2015 to be cashed at the bank’s branch at Tarkwa on August 26 to cover the loan the complainant had offered him.

When the complainant presented the cheque on the said date, it was dishonoured with the explanation that the accused person’s account has been closed.

Detective Amponsah said the complainant reported the issue to the police for investigation.

The accused person was arrested by the Sofoline police in Kumasi, in another case which is pending before them for investigation.
