NGO organizes workshop for farmers

Mr Emmanuel Attakora, the President of the Rural Agricultural and Development Organization (RADO), has reiterated the call to government to invest in agriculture to stop the rural-urban migration.

He said this would ensure food security and the export of the surplus produce.

Mr Attakora was speaking during the opening of a three-day workshop in Akim Asuom in the Eastern Region, to train farmers in modern agricultural methods and the appropriate techniques to reduce rural poverty.

He said the provision of agricultural inputs, appropriate technology, research, and extension support to farmers would go a long way to mitigate rural urban migration.

He urged government, especially the local government authorities to extend support to peasant farmers in the area of storage, transport and marketing infrastructure, to facilitate smooth movement of farm produce to the marketing centres to help end post- harvest losses.

He said that the increased urbanization and migration without concerted effort would undermine any attempt for food security and poverty reduction.

He said it was for this reason that, RADO; a non-governmental organization has stepped in to offer farmers the needed support in training and financing.

He said the support was to encourage farmers to stay in their communities to promote sustainable agricultural development.

Mr George Asamani, the Kweabibirem District Extension Officer, lauded RADO for the initiative to reduce poverty for sustainable development.

He urged farmers to avail themselves for the numerous training opportunities and also adhere to the use of appropriate technologies.
