Four young girls in the Karaga District of the Northern Region are earning their livelihood through mobile phone repairs, a trade perceived to be reserved for males, especially in rural areas.
Miss Latifa Mohamed, Miss Zaharawu Mohammed, Miss Mariam Yahaya and Miss Rubaba Iddrisu have been repairing mobile phones for the past one year after receiving intensive training on the job.
Speaking to the GNA in at Karaga on Friday said they are making sustainable income to support themselves and their families through the repairs.
Miss Yahaya said the job is a lifeline and has made she and her colleagues role models in their various communities.
Mr Mohammed Ukasha Project Officer of NORSAAC, in the Karaga/Gushegu Zonal Area explained that the girls were part of a Sustainable Livelihood Initiative Project been funded by Empower, a US based Organisation in the area.
He said the initiative, which is being implemented by NORSAAC, a gender-based advocacy NGO in Tamale seeks to equip young people with effective and efficient entrepreneurial skills to be self-employed and economically stable.
Mr Ukasha said most young people in the district had benefited from the training in the fields of bicycle repairs, financial literacy and business management skills training as well as mobile phone repairs, and financial support to young women.
