W/R records low road accidents

Western Regional Commander of Motor Transport Traffic Unit (MTTU) of the Ghana Police Service, Michael Dandy Zah, has revealed that the rate of accidents in the region has reduced, noting that accidents cannot be eradicated but can be controlled.

He made this known during an interview with Today at Sekondi in the Western region.

He explained that in the first quarter of both last and this year, road accidents saw significant reduction.

For instance, he said in the last quarter of 2014, 259 accident cases were recorded while in the first quarter of 2015 the region recorded 169 accident cases.

He continued that the second quarter of this year also witnessed 140 cases.

The western regional commander noted that the cause of accidents in the country is due to bad attitude on the road.

He recounted when a workshop was organised to educate drivers on road safety measures and regulations, only few drivers attended the workshop.

“Driving is not an easy task because drivers use all their five senses when driving”, he said.

He added: “Drivers should make sure their engines, lightning system among others are functioning well before they start driving and also whenever they are sick they should seek medical care.”

He also advised drivers to desist from taking alcoholic beverages in order to avoid accidents, saying they should slow down when they are driving.

He assured residents of the region of his outfit’s commitment to bring accidents to the barest minimum, asking drivers to observe road signs.
