Reverend Francis Ohene Agyekum, the Dormaa North District Pastor of the Assemblies of God Church, has appealed to parents to imbibe in their children a “can-do-spirit,” in order to propel them to achieve excellence in life.
Rev. Agyekum who is also the Chairman of the Parent-Teacher Association (PTA) of ‘Yesu Mmo’ Basic School, made the appeal at the third graduation ceremony of the school at Dormaa-Ahenkro.
He cautioned parents against the usage of foul language which discouraged and demoralized children, and advised parents to rather assist their children to identify challenges and obstacles which confronted them for solutions.
Rev Agyekum asked parents and guardians to closely monitor the activities of their children and wards to shield them against bad influences, while ensuring educational investments in them remained a top priority.
In an address delivered for him, Mr. Isaac Nsiah Edwards, the Dormaa Central Municipal Director of Education, said it was the responsibility of parents and guardians to provide the basic needs of their children and wards, and structure them to be fully integrated into society.
He appealed to teachers to be role models, and ensure the provision of a conducive environment for teaching and learning, besides inculcating in them a sense of responsibility, patriotism, dedication, commitment to duty, and respect for the elderly in society.
Mr Edwards underscored the need for teachers and school authorities to help pupils and students to understand why they were in school, if quality education was to be meaningful and an asset in their environments.
Mr. Gordon Asubonteng, the Dormaa Central Municipal Chief Executive, said there was the urgent need for schools in the Municipality to strive for excellence, saying that “this starts with the development of the mind”.
Mr. Asubonteng stated that quality human resource base was required to transform the socio-economic development of the Dormaa State, and was of the view that it partly demanded the selfless contributions of teachers.
Mrs. Juliana Oppong Peprah, the Proprietress of the School, said it was established in 1998 with one pupil, but currently pupil-student population stood at 700.
