Grasscutter rearing workshop opens

Nkoranza (B/A) July 8, GNA – A five-day technical training workshop on grasscutter rearing organized jointly by the Nkoranza District Assembly and the Business Advisory Centre (BAC) for 45 farmers has opened at Nkoranza in Brong-Ahafo Region.

It is aimed at imparting technical know-how in the vocation to farmers and to help stem the incidence of annual bushfires mostly caused by hunters for the animal.

Mr. Martin Kwasi Owusu, a retired agriculturalist, noted that, “unfortunately most people prefer the meat of animals in the wild to that of domestic ones”, but added that grass-cutter rearing had a very high turnover.

Mr. Owusu called on the participants to pay heed to the advice given at the workshop, as the vocation would help improve their economic activities as well as their standard of living. Mr. Mark Ankomah, Head of the BAC at Nkoranza reiterated that the workshop was to help improve the living standards of the people and the development of the communities.

He said an association of grasscutter farmers would be formed in the district after the workshop and the sponsors of the workshop would be visiting members periodically to monitor their progress and offer more advice.

Mr. Kwasi Gyan, a staff of the Nkoranza office of the BAC advised the participants to keep regular and accurate reports on their activities to enable them to effectively monitor their progress. Topics to be treated include “Economic importance of grass-cutter rearing”, “Investment cost”, “Breeding and management”, “Feeding and housing of grass-cutters”.
