Best performing MMDAs to receive National Awards

Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies (MMDAs) which will in future pass Coalition for Democratic Development (CDD) and United Nations Children Education Fund (UNICEF) assessment, will be accorded National Awards.

The MMDAs are being assessed by the NGOs on their level of development in six thematic areas.

The areas are: Health, Education, Sanitation, Water, Security and Governance, and the annual assessment will be under a programme dubbed: “Ghana’s District League Table” (DLT).

The Jomoro District Co-ordinating Director (DCD), Mr Abudu Amadu, made this known at a stakeholders’ meeting of the Assembly at Half Assini.

He was speaking on quality health delivery, particularly in the districts, and the nation at large.

Mr Amadu said the Jomoro District placed 143rd with 55 marks out of the 216 Assemblies on the 2014 League Table.

He disclosed that the Tano South District in the Brong Ahafo Region was first with 76 marks, and Karaga District being the last on the list with 15 marks.

He said the district has sanitation, health, security and education challenges, adding that open defecation in communities, poor BECE results, were some of the reasons that placed it at that position on the DLT.

According to him, the District League Table was a simple ranking tool on level of development of each Assembly, which would be an annual ritual to reward deserving MMDAs in future.

He said in democratic countries, the provision of goods and services rested on social accountability between citizens and their government representatives.

The DCD said the DLT was aimed at increasing social accountability for development across the districts, improving state responsiveness in services delivery, supporting Government to better understand and monitor the country, among others.
