GWCL told to go after MMDAS

The Minister of Water Resources, Works and Housing, Dr. Kwaku Agyemang-Mensah, has asked the Ghana Water Company Limited (GWCL) to initiate legal action against Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs) which have defaulted in the payment of water bills.

He said instead of disconnections, the GWCL should use legal means to clear the erroneous impression that MDAs had been exempted in payment of water bills.

Dr. Agyemang-Mensah said this in Accra last Friday, when he launched a six-month programme aimed at enhancing and sustaining the performance of GWCL especially in revenue mobilization.

The minister also used the occasion to announce a GHc8-million increase in the revenue collection of GWCL during a 100-day performance programme signed with the government.

The company closed the 100-day programme last Friday with an impressive GHc25 million revenue record of all time, compared to GHC17 million in March.

Speaking to The Ghanaian Times after the launch in Accra, the Communication Manager of GWCL, Mr. Stanley Martey, said this highest performance was as a result of change of attitude towards work by personnel of the company.

He said since the GWCL signed the performance agreement with the government in March, service delivery had improved tremendously while response from the public had been positive.

Under the slogan, “Ghana water… at your service”, he said, the programme had resulted in timely response to burst and leakages, prompt attention to customer complaints and increase in request for new service connection.

Mr. Martey explained that regional and district managers as well as the headquarters in Accra were given specific targets to meet under the agreement, which if not met could result in the reduction of their salaries by 20 per cent.
