Equip youth with employable skills – NGO

Mr Anthony Kwaku Amoah, Public Relations Officer of Ghana Schools Project, an NGO, has urged society to support technical and vocational training programmes, which give the youth employable skills.

Mr Amoah said one of the best forms of education is to equip the youth with skills and competencies that would make them employable and innovative.

Speaking at a Parent-Teacher Association meeting at the New Century Career Training Institute at Dansoman in Accra, Mr Amoah, an educationist and counsellor, supported the call for strong stakeholder participation in the delivery of good quality education, including technical and vocational training.

“Gone are the days when society focused mainly on a purely grammar type of education, where parents and guardians would want their wards to go to only secondary schools for courses in the sciences, arts and the likes.

“What we now need more as a nation are things like plumbing, dress making, carpentry and catering.

“I urge all of us to embrace such and similar courses so upon completion, trainees can do something for themselves rather than gallivanting on the streets for non-existent white collar jobs.”

Mrs Lydia Duvor, Manager and Head of the Institute, who also chaired the meeting, commended parents, guardians and stakeholders for their support for the school over the years.

“We still need more of your support for us to produce the best of graduates we are looking for,” she said.

The Institute, a private co-educational centre since its inception about 15 years ago, has been training youth in courses like Plumbing, Dress making, Electricals, Refrigeration and Air Conditioning, Carpentry and Joinery, Computer Hardware, Leather Works, Electronics and Catering with a student population of more than 500.
