Three men busted over $196,000 SIM box fraud

The Communication Task Force, a subsidiary of the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) of the Ghana Police Service has arrested three men who allegedly defrauded the state of $ 196, 992. 00, through SIM box fraud.

The suspects, Selasi Dorfenyo,24 , Nicholas Ntsu,16, and Eric Akpanya, 30 were arrested on 6, July at their hideout at Tema ,Community 12, where they were busily scratching top up cards and loading unto SIM cards boxes which were operational at the time of their arrest.

The task force conducted thorough search at the premises and retrieved two (2) SIM boxes, seven hundred MTN SIM cards, one hundred Airtel And MTN top up cards , one generator, two heavy duty batteries, one UPS (Uninterrupted Power Supply), one computer laptop, one mini tablet and sixteen antennas.

The investigators are yet to close in on one Lebanese believed to be the employer of the suspects and one MTN retailer who is also an accomplice.

The taskforce comprises of personnel from the National Communication Authority, Telecommunication Service Providers and Subah Info Solutions limited.

Since 2011, 20 SIM box fraud cases, involving 24 persons, have been recorded.
