Imoro Ayarna is dead

Mr Ivor Kobina Greenstreet, General Secretary of Convention Peoples Party (CPP), has announced the death of Alhaji Imoru Ayarna, 98, a founding member of the party at Bawku in the Upper East Region.

A statement issued by the CPP said the businessman and politician, died on Saturday.

Alhaji Ayarna founded the People’s Action Party (PAP) in 1969 after the ban on party politics was lifted.

He contested the parliamentary elections that year but lost.

He also contested the 1979 presidential elections as an independent candidate but fellow northerner Dr Hilla Limann of the People’s National Party (PNP) emerged winner.

Alhaji Ayarna was one of the Ghanaian politicians sentenced to death by firing squad in 1973 during the military rule of Colonel Ignatius Kutu Acheampong, who later commuted the sentence to life imprisonment.
