Dagomba youth attack Ashaiman police station

About 200 irate young men believed to be Dagombas, on Sunday, June 28, stormed the Ashaiman District Police Headquarters in an attempt to forcibly release from police cells two murder suspects.

The suspects, Ibrahim Shaban, 19, an auto mechanic, and a 26-year-old driver’s mate, whose name was not given, were being held at the Police cells for allegedly shooting someone at Ashaiman Old Tulaku.

A team of officers of the Rapid Deployment Force from the Tema Regional Police Command, who were called in for re-enforcement, brought the situation under control with the help of some opinion leaders, who appealed to the irate group to leave the premises.

A statement signed by Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Juliana Obeng, the Tema Regional Police Public Affairs Officer, said on Sunday, the Command received information that five men armed with shot guns stormed Ashaiman Old Tulaku at about 00:20 hours, attacked and shot Shirazu Fatau in the neck and bolted.

Complainants of the case, who were relatives of the victim, succeeded in arresting Shaban, who resides at Ashaiman at about 11:05 hours on the same day.

Shaban then led complainants to the hideout of the second suspect at Adjei-Kojo in the Tema West Constituency.

The statement said the suspects were detained in police custody as investigations continued.

However, at about 12:30 hours the same day, the youth numbering about 200 thronged the police station with the intention to forcefully rescue the suspects.

The Tema Police Command has appealed to residents of Ashaiman, especially the youth to desist from attacking police stations or police personnel when people are arrested for committing crimes.

“The Police will not be cowed by people who take the laws into their own hands and resort to violence at the least opportunity. Such people will be dealt with severely according to law”, it stated.
