Minister tasks MMDAs to support domestic tourism

Mrs Elizabeth Ofosu Adjare, the Minister of Tourism, Culture and Creative Arts, has entreated Metropolitian, Municipal and District Assemblies (MMDAs) to allocate resources for the development of domestic tourism in their areas.

She said MMDAs must dedicate part of their Internally Generated Funds (IGF) to improve and develop potential tourist attraction sites in their areas, indicating that could also be a measure to double their funds.

Mrs Ofosu-Adjare said this, on Thursday, when she interacted with the Municipal Chief Executives (MCEs) and District Chief Executives (DCEs) from the Northern Region, during a week’s familiarisation tour to tourist sites in the Region.

She called on MCEs and DCEs to form tourism and creative arts committees for them to identify potential tourism sites in the Region to be harnessed to alleviate poverty.

She said as part of the Ministry’s 15-year development plan, every District was supposed to own their tourist sites and make it an economically viable venture, to create jobs for the locals, and improve on the living conditions of the people.

“It is your duty and responsibility to own tourist attraction sites in your various Municipalities and Districts,” she explained.

Alhaji A.B.A. Fuseini, the Deputy Northern Regional Minister, urged the MMDAs to tap the technical expertise and guidelines of the Ministry of Tourism, Culture, and Creative Arts to develop their sites to promote domestic tourism.

He commended the Minister and her team for their efforts to improve on tourism potentials for the development of the economy.
