Woman with amnesia stuck at hospital with no relatives

Officials of the University of Ghana Hospital are searching for relatives of an elderly woman who has been on admission since March 2015.

The woman, known only as Maame Ekua, was brought in on March 16 after being knocked down by a hit and run driver.

Doctors fear she may have lost her memory as she is unable to recall anything from her past. No relatives have come forward since she was admitted.

The administrator at the hospital, Eric Gaisey told Starr News’ Tawakalitu Braimah that “she could speak at the initial stages but refused to reveal certain information about herself and her family”.

She is being treated for other medical conditions, according to officials.

Gaisey added she then fell into “a spasm of unconsciousness” and it has been difficult getting relevant information from her. All they know, according to him, is that she claims to reside around the Suame Police Station in Kumasi in the Ashanti region.

The hospital has had to foot her medical bills for the past three months; totaling at least GH¢ 2,000.

Gaisey noted the situation makes it imperative for the relatives to come forward.
