Heaped refuse posing health threat

Two weeks after what has been described by many as an “unprecedented” twin disaster- fire and flood- that hit Accra on June 3, 2015, heaped refuse still remained on the streets of Accra uncollected, posing health danger, Today can confirm.

The situation, Today understands, has the potential of posing health threat to residents of the Accra.

For instance, the situation at the Kaneshie Market was an eyesore when Today visited there few days ago.

This paper observed that in front of the market has become a dumping site which situation could affect the health conditions of not only residents in the area but patrons of the market.

Speaking to Today in an interview, a shop owner at Kaneshie Market, William, disclosed that the flood destroyed most of his wares including that of his colleagues to the extent that they could not do anything with them other than to throw all of them away.

A trader who gave her name as Janet admitted that “we know it isn’t safe for our health to sit here but we have nowhere to go and if we should leave here to somewhere, the Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) Taskforce will come chasing us.”

To this end, the traders pleaded with authorities responsible for collecting rubbish in Accra to do something about the situation.

Meanwhile, Ghana Health Service (GHS) has cautioned the general public to be careful of what they eat as there is the possibility of cholera outbreak.
