Mr Kwasi Ameyaw-Cheremeh, incumbent Member of Parliament (MP) for Sunyani East, narrowly escaped defeat in keenly contested parliamentary primaries of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in Sunyani on June 13.
The MP polled 388 votes to beat his only contender, Mr George Kumi, a former Ambassador to Libya who obtained 387 votes out of the 777 valid votes cast in the election conducted and supervised by the Electoral Commission.
In a related development NPP delegates at the Tano North Constituency in the Region retained Ms Freda Prempeh, the incumbent MP for the area.
She polled 372 votes to beat her only contender, Mr Ernest Kusi Duah, the Presiding Member of the Tano North District Assembly, who had 157 votes.
Ms Prempeh told the delegates and NPP supporters that her victory “is a total victory for the NPP in Election 2016”.
She commended the delegates for the confidence reposed in her, and asked them not to allow the internal election to divide them.
Ms Prempeh said the 2016 general election is crucial for the NPP and therefore appealed to the supporters and members of the party to bury their differences and support the campaign.
“We have no time to at all. The campaign has started and we must all participate effectively to bring the NPP back to power,” she said.
