WHO Gives $203,400 Equipment To MOH

The World Health Organisation (WHO) yesterday donated equipment worth 203,400 dollars to the Ministry of Health (MOH) in Accra.

The items were 1,200 bales of untreated bednets, eight pallets of K-otchrine tabs for impregnating bednest, eight multi-media desk top computers, two Dell Attitude lap top computers, a package of Microsoft XP professional software, and two carry cases for laptop.

Others were one Epson LCD Multi media projector, one Epson digital camera, six Uninterrupted Power Supply (UPS) systems and three HP 1200 laser printers. Presenting them, the WHO Country Representative, Dr. Melville George, said the donation was the WHO’s support to the Ministry for Information and on data collection.

He said it was also to assist in building the capacity in the Ministry in its efforts to fight malaria and push the National Insurance Scheme through. Dr. George noted that the sub-Saharan region was prone to malaria which results in the deaths of six per cent of pregnant women each year.

He said the government alone could not fight against the disease in the country, and appealed to other international bodies to come to the aid of the government. He expressed WHO’s willingness to support Ghana in the fight against the outbreak of any disease.

Receiving the items, the Minister for Health (MOH), Dr. Kwaku Afriyie, said that was not the first time WHO had made that gesture to the government of Ghana and expressed the nation’s thanks to WHO.
