Children must be protected during rainy season – Veep

The Vice President, Paa Kwesi Bekoe Amissah-Arthur, has called for protection for school children in particular and Ghanaians in general as the country is ushered into a rainy season.

According to him, the recent heavy rainfall is on point with predictions of meteorologists for the country.

“The Ghana Meteorological Agency predicts that we experience torrential rainfall between the last week of May and the middle of June every year,” he said.

“This, therefore, is a reminder for everyone to carefully follow the weather forecast to take steps to protect particularly school children during this period.”

The Vice President made this call on Monday, June 8 when he led government functionaries to observe a short memorial service at the Flagstaff House for the victims of the June 3 flood-cum-fire disaster.

The ceremony was officiated by Reverend Dr Paul Frimpong Manso, the General Superintendent of the Assemblies of God Church.

He asked politicians not to take advantage of the disaster to settle political scores.

“If we do these things, we hurt those who have lost relatives and property. Let us as a nation come together.”

The country started a three-day national mourning on Monday with a memorial service scheduled to be held on Wednesday at the disaster site of Kwame Nkrumah Circle.

At least 150 persons lost their lives to twin disasters.

The ceremony at the presidency saw chairmen of the major political parties as well as members of the diplomatic corps in attendance.
