Reject students and jobless as assembly aspirants – MCE

Mr Jerry Akwei Thompson, Ga South Municipal Chief Executive, says the work of an assembly member is not for students and people with no jobs.

Mr Thompson said assembly membership is a tedious and expensive service demanding selflessness and sacrifice from people with jobs and expertise.

In an interview with the Ghana News Agency, the MCE urged the electorate to screen aspirants well before they cast their votes, indicating that, “In this time and age, why do you elect a student or someone in school and with no job as an assembly member? They come with no expertise and they just think of how to make money.”

He expressed regret at the way some assembly members renege on their responsibility as representatives of their areas at the Assembly and rather choose to blame their Chief Executives as the cause of the problems in their areas, and queried, “Who is the Assembly at all; is it the assembly member or the Chief Executive?”

He urged assembly members and the public to desist from blame games and support their communities by helping with self-help projects and programmes.
