Hundreds displaced in Alajo as homes get flooded

Residents of Alajo once again faced their almost forgotten nightmare when floods from Wednesday’s rains rendered them homeless.

Houses around Modex and Polo Park, all in the Alajo vicinity, were flooded from two major drains, one heading towards Maamobi and the other into the Odor River towards circle.

The flood in the rooms of residents was above window level forcing inhabitants to vacate and seek shelter in mosques and hotels not affected.

A teacher in the vicinity, Suad Salih, who lives at Shabba Street told GhanaWeb that hundreds of people sought for shelter in a mosque by her house which was not affected. Others also left in search of hotels when the mosque got crowded.

“Men were carrying old women behind their backs, children including babies were at the backs of their mothers and others carried home appliances to save them from being destroyed. Among the people seeking shelter was a pregnant woman who was having contractions,” she said.

Suad Salih added that the displaced people returned to their homes to salvage what they could from their flooded homes.

Meanwhile, some houses, walls, shops and cars have been destroyed by the flood which is fairly visible in the Alajo area. The banks of the Odor River has gathered a lot of rubbish and cars pulled by strong currents of the water from other parts of Accra. Some cars have also been submerged by the river.

NADMO officials can be spotted in the area offering support to those affected.
