Railway Workers Fly Red Flag

Workers of the Ghana Railway Company (GRC) throughout the country have started flying red-flags at all installations of the company as a sign of their threat to withdraw their services and also embark upon massive street demonstration to protest against the delay in the adjustment of the tariff paid by the Ghana Bauxite Company (GBC) which they consider as meagre.

Mr. Samuel Kokovena, the General Secretary of the local union told the paper in a telephone interview that, “for now we have not withdrawn our services. It is just a sign of our threat. A dateline will soon be set by which time if we do not see anything positive about the increase in tariff, we would be left with no option but to withdraw our services entirely.”

“Chronicle” gathered that the flying of the red flags and the wearing of red bands by the workers started last week Monday. It adds that had it not been the patience exercised by the leadership of the workers, operations of the company and the two mineral companies at the centre of the dispute GBC and Ghana Manganese Company (GMC) would have been brought to a halt long time ago.
