AMA boss unhappy with road maintenance works

Dr Alfred Oko Vanderpuije, Accra Metropolitan Chief Executive (MCE), has called on the Urban Roads Department to exercise its authority on the contractor working on a six- kilometre road in Accra.

Dr Vanderpuije registered his protest when he paid a visit to Osu to acquaint himself with routine road maintenance works in the area.

He said the bitumen spread on the road is not enough to hold the chippings which eventually would find its way back into the gutters when it rains.

He said the Accra Metropolitan Assembly has initiated a massive road maintenance works in the sub-metropolitan areas in Accra to prevent the threat of danger to road users.

Dr Vanderpuije also inspected progress of work on the street-naming and house-numbering project at Adabraka and Bukom in the Ga Mashie areas.

Mr Emmanuel Nortey, a Director at the Urban Roads Department, who took the MCE around, gave the assurance that excellent roads repair works would be carried out.

He said so far the contractor had completed almost 4.9 kilometres and the 1.5 which is under construction would be completed by the end of June.

Mr Kwadjo Yeboah, the Metropolitan Director of the Town and Country Planning said 239 street-naming sign poles have been erected, adding that; “in all 775 signs poles would be mounted in Osu Klottey Sub-metro District”.

He encouraged the contractors to assign numbers to the sign poles so that they could be easily identified by the public.

Mr Yeboah expressed gratitude to the World Bank for supporting the street-naming and house-numbering project in the country.
