Community builds 36-seater toilet facility through PPP

The people of Obogu near Juaso in the Asante Akim South District and Legacy Capital, a private micro-finance institution, have jointly built a 36-seater water closet toilet facility through a Public-Private Partnership (PPP) arrangement.

The facility which cost GH¢ 120,000 has brought immense relief to the people who until its construction, relied on two dilapidated structures, which posed serious health threat.

Legacy Capital under the partnership, took care of the funds for the project whereas the community provided labour.

The two parties would set up a committee to manage the facility and use the proceeds to defray the cost after which the community would fully own it.

Mr. De-graft Fokuo, the District Chief Executive (DCE) at a durbar to inaugurate the structure hailed the partnership between the community and the financial institution.

He said the partnership was a novelty in the District that must be replicated in other communities to facilitate accelerated development.

Such initiatives, he noted, complemented government’s efforts to provide basic amenities to the people and urged more corporate bodies to follow the example the gesture.

The DCE commended Legacy Capital for setting the pace in the District, and expressed the hope that others would follow suit.

He charged prospective members of the committee yet to be set up to guard against financial malfeasance to ensure prompt repayment, adding that other communities would be encouraged to do same depending on their performance.

Mr. Paul Boahen, Operations Manager of Legacy Capital said the project, a pilot one would be extended to sister communities if the Obogu project becomes successful.

He stated that his outfit was not only interested in providing banking services to the people, but was also committed to improving their living conditions.
