The Odorkor Divisional Commander of the Motor Traffic and Transport Unit (MTTU), ASP Abdulai Mumuni has expressed worry about the recent increase in the number of pedestrian deaths on the George Walker Bush Highway in the first quarter of 2015.
According to him, most of the accidents occurred under the Hong Kong Footbridge and Mallam market area.
Speaking to DAILY GUIDE in an interview, ASP Abdulai said in the first quarter of this year, 20 pedestrians were killed on the road as compared to six last year.
He noted that something must be done to stop the worrying trend.
ASP Abdulai Mumuni said last year a total of 153 vehicular accidents were recorded in the first quarter as compared to 267 this quarter.
“Out of the number, a total of 104 commercial vehicles were involved while there were 163 private cars involved in the first quarter of this year.
Forty motorbike accidents have been recorded this year as compared to 10 last year, the police chief said.
ASP Abdulai noted that most of the accidents occur at midnight and drivers involved mostly do not stop to take responsibility for their actions.
He cautioned pedestrians to be careful while crossing the road at odd hours.
“Those who cross the road under footbridges should also stop since it is dangerous, and drivers involved are often not held liable by the courts.”
