The Ghana Independent Broadcasters Association (GIBA) has cautioned its members to be circumspect in their reportage over the death of Mr Adams Mahama, Upper East Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party.
Mr Mahama was pronounced dead at the Bolgatanga Regional Hospital on Thursday after some unidentified assailants poured acid on him on Wednesday night.
A statement issued by the Executive Council of the Association ahead of its interaction with broadcasters in Northern, Upper East and Upper West Regions, and copied to the Ghana News Agency in Accra, condemned the act as cowardly.
It asked members to be mindful of the simmering tensions surrounding the case and not to allow their platforms to be used to further any parochial political or tribal interest.
“Let us be mindful of the potential security threat that this attack poses in the region and not provide our platforms for any self -serving group to exploit it. We have our Code of Conduct on political reportage as a guide,” the statement added.
It also called on the security services, especially the Ghana Police Service, to act swiftly to bring the perpetrators to book.
