Ghana has denied receiving a request for the arrest of Liberian President Charles Taylor. Earlier today, a UN-backed tribunal in Sierra Leone indicted the Liberian president for war crimes and sent a warrant for his arrest to Ghana. The indictment accuses Mr Taylor of crimes against humanity and other human rights violations during the eleven-year civil war in Sierra Leone.
The Liberian president supported the Sierra Leonean rebels in exchange for diamonds. They were also allowed to use Liberia as a base for operations. Mr Taylor, who was in the Ghanaian capital Accra for peace talks with several Liberian rebel movements, has meanwhile returned to his country.
