Metropolitan, municipal and district assemblies (MMDAs), have been asked to provide legislation and the requisite infrastructure to make pre-sorting of refuse compulsory before disposal.
Mr Robert Amiteye, Project Coordinator, Environmental Health Club, said pre-sorting which ordinarily means separating organic materials like food waste from inorganic materials like glass and plastic products would create a new environmental consciousness among Ghanaians.
In an interview with the Ghana News Agency in Tema, he said the “practise would cure Ghana’s biggest environmental sickness which is the wanton littering of rubber products”.
Mr Amiteye said pre-sorting is in itself a responsibility which brings about orderliness, precision and creativity in children.
He, therefore, called on the Ministry of Education to liaise with relevant authorities to encourage pre-sorting of refuse on school compounds.
“We have ignored the environment for a long time. It is about time we started cleaning up using practical measures. Posterity would not forgive this generation if we make filth part of our national heritage.”
