TEWU boils over poor conditions of service

Teachers and Educational Workers’ Union (TEWU) are boiling with rage over what they have described as a “deafening attitude” by the government to review their conditions of service and non-payment of overtime allowances.

Speaking in an interview with Today in Accra, the General Secretary of TEWU, Mr. Ralph Apaya, called on all members of TEWU to join forces to battle government to address their grievances which are threatening the economic and social survival of the union members.

The central government, according to him, has failed to honour its part of the bargain which was to address the conditions of service of TEWU members.

According to the TEWU general secretary, these conditions of services include non-promotion of members in the various institutions, non-payment of overtime allowances, unsatisfactory handling of retiring members’ pension and healthcare needs of TEWU members.

Mr. Abaya indicated that, the persistent failure of the central government to address the above concerns of members of the Union in basic, secondary and tertiary institutions in Ghana had created several problems for families and generated debate within the Union.

He was of the view that too many discrepancies in the salary structure of teachers and TEWU could rather affect teaching and learning and also hamper the vision of quality education delivery in the country.

Mr. Abaya therefore reaffirmed the TEWU’s commitment to continue the hoisting of flags at their various schools and institutions if no good response was heard from the powers- that-be.
