Zoomlion operates “pay as you dump” programme in B/A

The Brong-Ahafo Regional Office of Zoomlion, a waste collection and management firm, will soon implement a “pay as you dump” programme as a means to properly manage waste in the region.

Under the programme people who dump waste into the firm’s containers placed at some vantage points will pay a fee.

Mr Laud Mike Tagoe, Brong-Ahafo Regional Manager of Zoomlion, who made this known to the Ghana News Agency (GNA) at Abesim near Sunyani, explained that the programme would be implemented on pilot basis.

He said his office had completed feasibility studies in Sunyani, and it was in consultation with authorities at the Sunyani Municipal Assembly, to fix appropriate fees for the implementation of the pilot programme.

According to Mr Tagoe, the Municipal Assembly would engage security personnel to man the waste containers, adding that accrued revenue would go directly into the coffers of the Assembly.

“The revenue would be used to purchase more waste management containers and other tools to support sanitation programmes,” he added.

He condemned the indiscriminate disposal of waste, especially near waste containers in the Sunyani Municipality.

Mr Tagoe expressed concern about the deplorable nature of the road leading to the only landfill site in Sunyani, pointing out that because of the state of the road, almost all its waste trucks had developed fault.

He said, currently only three waste trucks of the company were working, which, he noted were not enough for waste collection.

Mr Tagoe appealed to the Municipal Assembly to reshape the road to facilitate the movement of the trucks to the landfill site for waste disposal.
