UDS campuses to become autonomous universities

The government has constituted a 10 – member committee to work to convert the Nyankpala, Navrongo and Wa campuses of the University for Development Studies (UDS), into autonomous universities.

The move, amongst others, is to expand access to quality tertiary education in the country.

Dr Christine Amoako-Nuamah, a senior member in government, announced this when she led some members of the committee, during a courtesy call on Alhaji Limuna Mohammed-Muniru, Northern Regional Minister at his office in Tamale on Monday.

The meeting was to inform the Regional Minister about the mission of the committee in the region, which was to hold consultations with authorities of the UDS at its campuses on the issue of converting the three campuses into autonomous universities.

The 10 – member committee is composed of officials from the National Council for Tertiary Education, Ghana Technology University College, amongst other relevant institutions.

Dr Amoako-Nuamah expressed satisfaction that the three campuses of the UDS were well established, and said, as a result, they should be converted into autonomous universities within the next one year.

She said there would be the need for amendment of some of the laws and statutes of UDS to pave way for the conversion.

Alhaji Mohammed-Muniru underscored the importance of education in the development of the country, and gave the assurance that the Regional Coordinating Council would help to ensure the success of the exercise.

The University for Development Studies which was established some 20 years ago, has four campuses located in Tamale, and Nyankpala in the Northern Region, Navrongo in the Upper East Region, and Wa in the Upper West Region.
