Driver jailed 10 years for robbery

An Accra Circuit Court on Tuesday handed a 10-year jail term to one Ishmael Clottey, a driver, for robbing and inflicting wounds on a student.

Ishmael was said to have committed the robbery at Kaneshie in the Greater Accra Region.

He pleaded not guilty to the offence, but the court presided over by Mr Francis Obiri found him guilty and convicted him accordingly.

Prosecuting Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Patrick Morkeh said the complainant is a student resident at Kaneshie while the convict lives at Zongo Junction.

He said on July 13, 2013 at about 1130 hours, the complainant was walking home together with two friends from Kaneshie First Light towards the foot bridge when the convict and two others at large, armed with machete, attacked them.

The Police said the convict and his cohorts ordered the complainant to surrender his mobile phone and all other items on him.

Police revealed that Ishmael Clottey succeeded in collecting the complainant’s Samsung mobile phone and a wallet containing National Health Insurance Identity Card, receipts, students ID and a cash of GH¢11.00.

The convict, after the act, inflicted wounds on the left hand fingers of the complainant and bolted, but was later arrested by a mob with the machete and a coca-cola bottle concealed in his trousers, the prosecution revealed.

According to the prosecution, a search conducted on him revealed the complainant’s mobile phone and a bunch of keys, which were handed-over to the Police.

Police also told the court that during investigations, Ishmael admitted the offence and said he used a pair of scissors instead of a machete.
