Gov’t allocates Ghc30m for sanitation ‘police’

Government has allocated Ghc30 million towards the recruitment of sanitation guards to enforce sanitation laws across the country.

The allocation is part of the Common Fund Formula approved by Parliament this year.

This was disclosed by Local Government and Rural Development Minister Collins Dauda in the Eastern Regional capital Koforidua when he received donations from Joy Industries in support of the National Sanitation Day exercise to be held in the region Saturday. The items donated include 15 shovels, 15 rakes, 1000 nose masks, 1000 gloves and Ghc10,000.

Mr Dauda said because some people are insensitive to sanitation concerns in the country, “Government has allocated Ghc30 million in the Common Fund Formula approved by Parliament to recruit sanitation guards who will go round to inspect insanitary conditions and fine perpetrators accordingly”.

He emphasised that the National Sanitation Day exercise, which is held in the first week of every month, aims at rekindling the spirit of communal labour in the country and also creating awareness on the need for Ghanaians to be environmentally disciplined to help prevent communicable diseases such as cholera, which kills many people yearly.

The Local Government Minister who toured the region together with his deputies, as well as the Eastern Regional Minister, Mr Antwi Bosiako Sekyere and his deputy Mavis Ama Frimpong, engaged traditional leaders and staff of the various assemblies on the need for them to participate in the exercise.
