Exempt hospitals from paying utility bills – Dr Dzedzegbor

Dr Apetogbor Dzedzegbor, Medical Superintendent of the Agona Swedru Municipal Hospital, has made a passionate appeal to the government, to rescind its decision to make health institutions pay their own utility bills.

According to him, services provided by health facilities are socially-oriented, and therefore do not attract commercial rates, to enable the facilities to generate funds.

Dr Dzedzegbor who made the appeal at the Annual get-together organized by the Swedru Municipal Hospital for its staff at Agona Swedru, stated that the “National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS) charges for health facilities do not cover cost of utility bills”.

He appealed to the government to pay NHIS arrears to health facilities, to help them defray some of their debts owned to the Pharmaceuticals and Utility Companies, as well as Filling Stations.

The Medial Superintendent said the hospital was making efforts to sustain the special Clinic Services like Ear, Nose and Throat (ENR), hypertensive and Sickle Cell.

He mentioned lack of adequate buildings, Doctors, Medical Assistants, and Midwives, as some of the problems facing the hospital.

Nana Kwame Donkoh the second, Gyasihene of the Nyakrom Traditional Area, and Mahodwehene, a suburb of Agona Swedru, assured the hospital authorities of the Swedruman Council of Chiefs’ preparedness to help improve sanitation in the town.

Mr Ibrahim Saaka, Deputy Co-ordinating Director of the Agona West Municipal Assembly, gave the assurance that the Assembly would do its best to provide accommodation for doctors.
